Shelter Dog Shakes Up the Show

In a pool of K9 competitors featuring purebreds and pedigrees and returning champions, one humble team is looking to leave their mark on the 8th Annual Space Coast Police K9 Competition.

James Bradley and K9 Mali are not your usual duo. Their story began in a Palm Beach animal shelter, where Mali was facing Euthanasia.

“She was just too much of a dog to be adopted,” Bradley said.

At the time, Mali was just 9 months old, and already labeled “aggressive” after nipping someone. Bradley, who originally came to the shelter to see a different dog, ended up leaving with Mali in his care.

“I just planned to foster her,” Bradley recalled. “But I couldn't get her adopted. She was just too crazy for anyone to adopt.”

Mali was not the first Malinois Bradley has worked with. He recalls that he first heard of the breed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unsure that he wanted one, he started working with Rescues in South Florida to foster and was struck by how many capable, high-energy dogs were overlooked because their needs exceeded what the average pet owner could provide.

“They need a job,” he explained. “They can't really make it in individual homes-- they're just over the heads of 99% of people.”

Bradley began sharing videos of shelter dogs online, hoping to connect them with experienced handlers and police departments. His efforts have given fresh starts to many dogs who might have otherwise been euthanized, and earned him a sizable internet following of more than 31 thousand followers on his FaceBook page, @Jim Bradley. Many of the dogs he's worked with have been flown across states to be trained as police K9s.

Mali, however, had different plans. Bradley learned how to work with Mali through Ivan Balananov’s renowned program to become a consistent and hardworking companion. While she possesses many of the qualities that make an exceptional K9, including an intense ball drive, athleticism and a love of challenging tasks, she lacks the confidence needed to navigate unfamiliar environments with the fearlessness expected of a police canine.

In the face of the competition, however, the pair remain unfazed. They are eager to show the world just how far they've come.

“She’ll perform well,” Bradley assured. “I'm looking forward to showing people what a shelter dog can do.”

For them, success on the field means more than record times and trophies. For Bradley, it's about challenging assumptions and reminding people that a dog’s circumstances do not define its potential. While Mali may not wear a police vest, her performance will show everyone the very reason Bradley continues his work: somewhere in a shelter, another overlooked dog may be waiting for someone willing to see what it can become.
